Scott’s latest feature speaks to his uniquely go-for-broke ethos, a glitzy, glittery, and decidedly murder-centric drama based on the real-life story of Patrizia Reggiani and Maurizio Gucci (yes, that Gucci). Scott has been trying to make a film about the pair’s twisted love affair (which arguably “ended” in murder, though plenty happened after Gucci was killed in 1995) since the early aughts, and after a series of setbacks, switch-ups, and snags, “House of Gucci” is primed for release later this year. The Grammy-winning singer and actress plays Maurizio Gucci's ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani, who was convicted of hiring a hitman to murder the former head of the Gucci fashion house.
Much of the remaining cast joined the following summer, and filming began in Italy, lasting from February through May 2021. If Leto and Pacino’s father-son pairing deliver on the kind of campy melodrama promised in the first “House of Gucci” trailer, a steady Driver is on the other end as Maurizio, whose romance with Patrizia builds to disaster as the impact of her manipulation lasts long after the pair split. That confusing collection is “House of Gucci,” a film that would have benefited from a coherent silhouette and a little hemming of its tiresome runtime. Maurizio's father and the son of Gucci founder Guccio, Rodolfo was a well-known actor in Italy – appearing in more than 40 films between 1929 and 1946 – before helping to lead the family business following his father's death.
